Every year around St. Patrick's Day, I get asked the same question. And before any of you can ask me this year, I'm just going to give you the answer.
No, there is no such thing as being honorary Irish just because you wear green on St. Patrick's day. Being Irish is a matter of culture, heritage, genetics, and having a large liver. Really, you must be a descendent from a person born in Ireland to truly be Irish.
While certain exceptions can be made for people who are close friends with or marry into an Irish family, this happens rarely and requires a formal ceremony involving a drunk priest, a bartender, and a perfect pint of Guinness.
If you aren't Irish, please still feel free to dress up in green, get merry, and have a pint or two in honor of the Saint who scared all the snakes off the Emerald Isle. We'll welcome you into the celebration and sing a song or two with you.
Unless you're some Jersey chach guido who is looking for a new excuse to participate in pure douchebaggery. Then we're liable to break a bottle of Harp over your head and stuff your leprechaun beard up your a#$.
And that would not be good for your health.
Trust me... I'm a doctor.
